Abstract
The most recent effort to enhance the process of language learning has involved the used of computer technology. The existence of technological multimedia opens a new era in developing the media that can be used in learning and teaching process. This belief leads to do research by using Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) program. However, using current CALL technology, even with its current limitations, for the development of speaking abilities has gained much attention. There has been some success in using CALL, in particular computer-mediated communication, to help speaking skills closely linked to “communicative competence and provide controlled interactive speaking practice inside or outside the classroom. This reseach is aimed to know the difference of speaking ability achievement between the control class, which used conventional program, and the experimental class which used the CALL program as teaching media. Besides, the method of research is used quantitative method which adopted experimental method using. Specifically, the purposes of this research are: (1) to describe the quality of the students’ achievement in speaking ability by using CALL program, (2) to describe the quality of the students’ achievement in speaking ability by using non-CALL program, and (3) to explain the differences between students’ ability in speaking taught by using CALL program and without using CALL program. The researcher took class VIIIb and VIIIc as sample. Class VIIIb was selected as experimental group and class VIIIc was selected as control group. Pre-test, post-test were used as techniques for collecting data. Pre-test and post-test were given in order to know students’ ability in speaking before and after the treatment is given to the experimental class. The result shows that the Levene’s Test for Equality of Variances of gaining score is 0.011 with the probability are 0.916. While the significance value of Equal Variances Assumed is 0.002 (0.002 < α =0.05), this is the probability less than 0.05 then H0 rejected. It means that the gaining of average score of pre-test and post-test of the both groups is significantly different. Or, in other words, the use of CALL program is 61.0 % more effective than conventional program. Further, the use of computer as teaching media is expected to give motivation to the teacher especially English teacher in developing their creativity in arranging and designing method and media of teaching.
