Abstract

ENGLISH As a part of communications, language are important roles in human life. From many language studies, one that has an important role is the meaning of the language itself. Talking about meaning, it is very important to know the true meaning of what the speaker or writer means. One object that contains meanings is song, because when someone likes a song it can caused by the meaning of the songs. So, to investigate further about the true meaning from a song it will be a significant research. This research refers to the study about connotative meaning in song lyrics, as a written language. The objective of this research is to find out the connotative meanings in selected Michael Jackson’s songs. The method that used in this research is descriptive analysis method, to analyze songs by describing it in written text form. The data sources are from 9 song lyrics by Michael Jackson that have selected by the writer: Man in the Mirror, Heal the World, Stranger in Moscow, Black or White, Earth Song, Beat It, We Are the World, There Must Be More to Life Than This, and Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’. This research explains that in the 9 song lyrics of Michael Jackson contained two dominant meanings there are conceptual meaning and the meaning that cannot understand as the conceptual but refers to other things out of this purely content. The writer used Leech’s theory to research about connotative meaning that contained in selected songs of Michael Jackson. To analyze connotative meaning on that songs, the researcher used qualitative data analysis technique with steps: data reduction, data display, and make a conclusion from the data that have been analyzed, with Miles and Huberman’s theory. On this analyzing step, the writer analyzed songs by selecting data that has connotative meaning, by comparing between what type of meaning that more suitable with the context of the songs and suitable with the song content. Then the writer analyzed and interpreted the whole of selected song lyrics to decide what message that want to be delivered in Michael Jackson’s songs. From the data analysis result can be concluded that found 26 data included as connotative meaning from 9 songs by Michael Jackson. Most of the songs that analyzed in this research shows that the meaning that more dominant used to deliver the song are conceptual meaning, than the connotative that not as dominant as the conceptual meaning. The moral message that delivered in the selected Michael Jackson’s songs is related with the context of humanity, social, racial issue, motivation, and also delivers the moral message about environment and the earth. INDONESIA Sebagai sebuah bagian dari komunikasi, bahasa memegang peranan penting dalam kehidupan manusia. Dari berbagai kajian ilmu bahasa, salah satu yang memegang peranan penting adalah makna dari bahasa itu sendiri. Berbicara tentang makna, tentu sangatlah penting untuk mengetahui makna sesungguhnya yang dimaksud sang pembicara atau penulis. Salah satu objek yang mengandung makna adalah lagu, karena biasanya seseorang menyukai sebuah lagu pasti karena maknanya. Maka untuk menelusuri makna sesungguhnya dari sebuah lagu tentunya akan menjadi suatu penelitian yang menarik. Penelitian ini merujuk pada studi tentang makna konotatif yang terdapat pada lirik lagu, sebagai sebuah bahasa tertulis. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengetahui makna-makna konotatif yang terdapat pada lagu-lagu terpilih dari Michael Jackson. Metode yang digunakan yaitu metode analisis deskriptif, yaitu untuk menganalisis lagu dengan cara mendeskripsikannya dalam bentuk teks tertulis. Sumber data yang didapat yaitu dari 9 lirik lagu Michael Jackson yang telah dipilih oleh penulis yakni di antaranya: Man in the Mirror, Heal the World, Stranger in Moscow, Black or White, Earth Song, Beat It, We Are the World, There Must Be More to Life Than This, dan Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’. Penelitian ini menjelaskan bahwa dalam 9 lagu Michael Jackson tersebut terdapat dua makna yang dominan yaitu makna konseptual yang sebenarnya atau makna yang tidak bisa dipahami secara konseptual saja namun merujuk pada hal lain di luar makna aslinya. Penulis menggunakan teori dari Leech untuk meneliti tentang makna konotatif yang terdapat pada lagu-lagu terpilih dari Michael Jackson. Untuk menganalisis makna konotatif dalam lagu-lagu tersebut, peneliti menggunakan teknik analisis data kualitatif dengan tahap reduksi data, penyajian data, dan membuat kesimpulan dari data yang dianalisis, dengan teori dari Miles dan Huberman. Pada tahap analisis ini peneliti menganalisis lirik lagu dengan memilah data yang mengandung makna konotatif yaitu dengan membandingkan makna mana yang lebih tepat dan sesuai dengan isi dan konteks lagu. Kemudian menginterpretasikan makna dari keseluruhan isi lirik lagu untuk menentukan pesan apa yang ingin disampaikan dari lagu-lagu Michael Jackson. Dari hasil analisis data, dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa ditemukan 26 data yang termasuk makna konotatif dari 9 lagu Michael Jackson. Mayoritas lagu yang dianalisis dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa makna yang digunakan untuk menyampaikan isi lagu lebih dominan menggunakan makna konseptual dibandingkan makna konotatif yang tergolong hanya sedikit. Pesan yang disampaikan merupakan pesan moral yang berkaitan dengan konteks kemanusiaan, isu sosial, isu rasial, motivasi, serta menyampaikan pesan tentang lingkungan dan bumi.
