Abstract
This study aims to analyze the speech acts and politeness strategies employed by netizens in responding to the feud between Donald Trump and Elon Musk on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The public dispute between these two prominent figures triggered various reactions from users, ranging from fanatic support and harsh criticism to sarcasm and humor. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, drawing on speech act theory from Austin and Searle as well as politeness strategy theory from Brown and Levinson. The data were collected through non-participatory observation and documentation of netizens’ responses relevant to the conflict. The selection of data was carried out using purposive sampling, in which comments were deliberately chosen based on their relevance to the focus of the study. The findings reveal that the most dominant types of speech acts are assertives and expressives, while the most frequently employed politeness strategy is bald on-record. These results highlight how netizens use language as a means of expressing their social and emotional positions amid a public conflict, as well as how politeness strategies adapt within digital communication, which tends to be fast, direct, and implicit.
