Abstract
Children tend to choose the strategies for the polite conversation that use the word or expression in order to show good manners especially with their family and older people. This study focuses on the politeness strategies on the child character that found in a movie script written by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, and the movie here is the movie entitled Dr. Seuss the Lorax (2012) by Chris Renaud presented by Illumination Entertainment and based on Dr. Seuss's children's book. The movie depicts the real examples of the use of politeness strategies in the main characters utterances. As a result, the writer intrigues to analyze the positive politeness strategies applied in Dr. Seuss The Lorax movie and the factors affecting a choice of positive politeness strategies. The writer has applied descriptive qualitative as the method of this study, in which Dr. Seuss The Lorax movie script was the source of data. Besides, the writer has used the movie as well to understand the situation involved. In analyzing the data, the writer has employed Brown and Levinsons (1987) politeness theory to categorize the main character of Dr. Seuss The Lorax movie utterances into fifteen positive politeness strategies. Brown and Levinsons (1987) theory of politeness factors was included to analyze the factors affecting the choices of politeness strategies. Based on the analysis, the writer finds that the main character applied ten positive politeness strategies, namely exaggerate, use in-group identity markers, seek agreement, avoid disagreement, offer or promise, be optimistic, include both the hearer and the speaker in the activity, give (ask or) reason, assume or assert reciprocity, and give gifts to hearer. Use in-group identity marker is concluded as the most frequent strategy to show or to give intimacy, power, and solidarity, whereas five strategies are not found in the main characters utterances, there is notice; attend to hearer, intensify interest to hearer, presuppose/ raise/ assert common ground, joke, and the last assert presuppose Ss knowledge. Furthermore, the second finding the factors affecting choices of positive politeness was sociological factors. The sociological factors included the social distance, the relative power, and the absolute ranking of impositions in the particular culture.
