Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of turn-taking strategies and exchange procedures used in the conversation between Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway in Variety “Actors on Actors”. This research uses descriptive qualitative method with subjective approach to interpret the data. In its analysis, this study uses the theory of turn-taking and exchange procedures from Anna-Brita Stenström (1994). The data were collected through transcription using Jefferson's (2009) transcript symbols. The results showed that from a total of 57 data, all three main types of strategies-Taking the Floor, Holding the Floor, and Yielding the Floor-appeared in the conversation between Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway. However, there was no use of New Start strategies in the Holding the Floor category due to the directed and professional conversation structure of both participants who were used to speaking in public spaces, so it did not require explicit repetition or improvement. In addition, all five types of exchange procedures were also found, except summoning, indicating the high conversational competence of both. These findings emphasize the importance of turn-taking strategies in conversation.
