Abstract
This study aims to identify turn-taking strategies and techniques in the “Beauty Within” podcast on YouTube, based on two selected videos. This study poses two main research questions: 1) What kinds of turn-taking strategies and techniques are used in the Beauty Within podcast? and 2) What is the most common technique used in the Beauty Within podcast? To answer these questions, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive method. Data was collected from the Beauty Within YouTube channel. The study identified a total of 100 examples of turn-taking strategies, as defined to (Stenstrom, 1994). Specifically, in the Taking the Turn category, there were 3 instances of Starting Up, 35 Taking Over, and 4 Interruptions. In the Holding the Turn category, 15 instances involved Filled Pauses and/or Verbal Fillers, 10 involved Silent Pauses, 5 involved Lexical Repetition, and 5 involved New Start. Yielding the Turn included 3 instances of Appealing, 8 Prompting, and 12 Giving Up. The study concluded that the taking the turn strategy was the most commonly used, especially with the taking over technique appearing 35 times. These strategies were applied consistently across the podcast episodes analyzed, even though the format and composition of the participants remained the same. These results suggest the importance of turn-taking strategies in podcast communication to create dynamic and participatory interactions among participants.
