Abstract
This study examines the teacher strategies employed to develop EFL students' speaking skills in an English course, as well as the students' responses to these strategies. Given that English is a foreign language in Indonesia, many students struggle to communicate effectively in English. This study aims to identify the teaching strategies employed in a course to enhance students' speaking skills. This study used qualitative methods with a case study design. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with teachers and students, and questionnaires. Observations examined the implementation of the strategy and student responses, while interviews explored the reasons behind the strategies and students' perceptions of them. The questionnaires supported the interview data regarding student responses. This research emphasizes instructional methodologies, including Communicative Language instructional (CLT), Task-Based Learning (TBL), and Fluency-Building procedures that promote genuine communication and confidence. The results demonstrate that the teacher employs Task-Based Learning and Fluency-Building techniques, predominantly via storytelling and frequent practice strategies. Additional strategies are describing picture, drilling, language games, group discussions, dialogue practice, and timed practice. Students exhibited heightened confidence and enthusiasm for engaging in class discussions, along with an enhanced ability to articulate their experiences and viewpoints. Despite encountering difficulties associated with restricted vocabulary, the assistance from teachers and a conducive classroom environment enabled students to surmount these challenges. The conclusions of this study confirm that diverse and interactive teaching strategies are highly effective in improving EFL students' speaking skills. Recommendations for course managers include adapting the curriculum to a variety of media and holding regular training sessions to improve the quality of teaching, which is expected to help students develop their English language skills more effectively.
