Abstract

In this research, the researcher analyzes the portrayal of women character as rebels in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Ayu Utami’s Saman as the objects of the study. The reason is the portrayal of women character as rebels has relation with reality. The women characters from both of novel portray the situation which are proper to rebels. So that, the researcher believes that there must be a problem in the how portray the women character that makes the researcher intends to analyze the portrayal women character as the proper problem to analyze. The researcher uses comparative literature study as the main theory in this research. Comparative literature is the study comparing one literary work with another literary work which different language and country. Comparative literature can be applied successfully and covering many possible areas of research in literature and culture. It’s because comparative literature can be used to express realities from literary works. Besides, comparative literature can be used to find out the similarities and differences from two works or more in every aspect. Furthermore comparative literature study can be used to compare literary works with other science disciplines. After compared both of the objects study, the portrayal of women characters, assumed by the researcher there are similarities and differences also the relationship with realities from both of novels. The researcher uses comparative method in investigating and analyzing the data. This research’s significant are to reveal how the portrayal of women character as rebels and show the significance of that rebellion in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre dan Ayu Utami’s Saman. The researcher analyzes the few cited like dialogue or narration as the data that show how the portrayal of women character as in the story. From the analyzed data, the researcher finds that some of women characters portray the rebellion as their characterization in the story. Furthermore, the researcher show and analyzes how both of authors portray rebellion by women characters all at once the relationship with the realities. The conclusion is there are the similarities and differences from the portrayal of women character as rebels in Jane Eyre and Saman. Besides, the portrayal of women character as rebels is the criticism from both of authors towards the reality. The conclusion is based on the data analysis which is conducted by the researcher. As the suggestion, the researcher hopes that this graduating paper can be a reference for those who are interested in novel, especially for students of English Department.
