Abstract

This research was conducted due to the low speaking skills of students at one vocational high school in Bandung, which was caused by limited speaking practice time and a lack of varied learning media. These conditions reduced students' opportunities to develop their speaking abilities and increased anxiety when asked to speak in English. Therefore, this study reviews the use of Monopoly as a learning media to improve students' speaking skills. The research questions are: (1) What are students' scores before (pre-test) using Monopoly as a learning media to enhance speaking skills (2) What are students' scores after (post-test) using Monopoly as a learning media and (3) Is there a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results after using Monopoly as a learning media Based on the formulation of the problem, the objectives of this research are: (1) To determine students' scores before using Monopoly as a learning media to improve speaking skills; (2) To determine students' scores after using Monopoly as a learning media; and (3) To find out whether there is a significant difference between students' speaking abilities before and after the implementation of Monopoly as a learning media. The conceptual framework of this research consists of four components: problem identification, pre-test, the use of Monopoly as a learning media, and post-test. This study also tests two hypotheses, namely H0, which states that there is no improvement in speaking skills, and Ha, which states that there is an improvement in students' speaking skills. The method used is a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design through the administration of pre-tests and post-tests. The research population consists of 11th-grade students at SMK YPF Bandung for the 2024/2025 academic year, with a sample of 22 students from class XI FI. Data were collected through a rubric-based speaking assessment test. The results showed that the average pre-test score was 41,73 and the post-test score was 71,04. The paired samples t-test results indicated a Sig. (2-tailed) value of less than 0,001, which is smaller than 0,05, so H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. The N-Gain value of 59.6% is categorized as quite effective in improving the speaking skills of 11th-grade students at SMK YPF.
