Abstract
This article aims to review and analyze Nancy T. Ammerman’s ideas presented in “Religious Identities and Religious Institutions” from The Handbook of the Sociology of Religion (2003). Employing a theoretical–analytical approach within the framework of narrative sociology, Ammerman conceptualizes religious identity not as a fixed category or a mere product of religious institutions, but as a dynamic and socially negotiated narrative process. Integrating classical and contemporary social theories (Goffman, Berger & Luckmann, Giddens, Bourdieu, and Somers), she explains religion as both structure and agency in the formation of identity. The analysis reveals that religion, in Ammerman’s perspective, operates as an embodied narrative practice lived physically, symbolically, and culturally within everyday life, institutions, and popular culture. This study contributes conceptually to the development of the sociology of religion, particularly in understanding pluralism, identity construction, and the transformation of religiosity in the digital era.
