Abstract

This study investigates the semantic shift of non-religious Arabic loanwords in Javanese using a qualitative descriptive-comparative approach. Data were collected from bilingual dictionaries and linguistic literature, identifying 85 Arabic loanwords, 40% of which underwent significant semantic change. The analysis revealed four main types of semantic shifts: broadening, narrowing, metaphorical extension, and generalization. Words such as ikhlas and nikmat shifted from spiritual to social meanings, while kabar narrowed to a more personal sense. Socio-cultural factors, including the unggah-ungguh basa system and the long-standing contact between Arabic and Javanese, play a crucial role in shaping these changes, reinforced by phonological and morphological adaptation. The findings support cross-cultural semantic theories that word meanings are socially and culturally negotiated rather than fixed. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on semantic change and Arabic–Javanese lexicography and suggests future corpus-based or field research to examine pragmatic and dialectal variations in actual language use.
