Abstract

ENGLISH: The electroplating industry is one of the rapidly growing industrial sectors in Indonesia and has the potential to generate wastewater containing heavy metals, one of which is copper (Cu). The presence of heavy metals at concentrations exceeding environmental quality standards can cause adverse impacts on the environment and human health. Therefore, an effective wastewater treatment method is required to reduce copper (Cu) concentrations in electroplating wastewater. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the electrodeposition method in separating Cu²⁺ metal ions from electroplating wastewater by varying voltage, processing time, and reducing agent concentration. The electrodeposition process was carried out using a carbon electrode as the anode and stainless steel as the cathode. Copper concentrations before and after the electrodeposition process were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS).The results showed that variations in voltage and processing time yielded optimum conditions at 12 volts and 120 minutes, resulting in a copper removal efficiency of 95.83%. For variations in reducing agent concentration, the optimum condition was achieved at a concentration of 0.4 M, with a copper removal efficiency of 78.33%. Application of the electrodeposition method to actual electroplating wastewater under conditions of 12 volts, 60 minutes, and a reducing agent concentration of 0.4 M resulted in a copper removal efficiency of 99.65%.Based on these results, it can be concluded that the electrodeposition method is effective in reducing Cu²⁺ ion concentrations in electroplating wastewater. Increasing voltage, processing time, and reducing agent concentration tends to enhance the efficiency of copper removal until an optimum condition is achieved.
