English for Specific Purposes (ESP) plays an important role in vocational education, particularly in the pharmacy field, where students are required to understand pharmaceutical information, standard operating procedures, and other technical documents commonly presented in English. However, English instruction in vocational schools is often still general in nature and may not fully reflect the actual language demands encountered during workplace practice. Grounded in the ESP framework proposed by Hutchinson and Waters (1987), which emphasizes that language instruction should be based on learners’ target needs, this study aimed to identify the necessities and lacks of English for Pharmacy Purposes among 12th-grade pharmacy students based on their internship (PKL) experiences, to explore alumni perceptions of the necessity of English proficiency in professional pharmacy contexts, and to determine target English language needs that should be addressed through an ESP-oriented program. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews involving pharmacy students and alumni at SMK KH A Wahab Muhsin Tasikmalaya, Indonesia. The findings reveal that English is frequently encountered in pharmacy-related workplace settings, particularly in written materials such as drug labels, product information leaflets, standard operating procedures, and pharmacy manuals, rather than in daily spoken interaction. The students reported several English-related difficulties, including limited pharmaceutical vocabulary, challenges in reading comprehension, pronunciation problems, and low confidence in using English. Meanwhile, alumni emphasized that English proficiency is especially important for understanding English-based documents and accessing pharmaceutical references, although its use in spoken communication remains limited and context-dependent. Based on these findings, this study highlights the need for an ESP-oriented program that focuses on reading skills, pharmacy-related vocabulary, and basic professional communication relevant to the pharmacy field. The results are expected to contribute to the development of supporting English learning activities that better align with the actual language needs of vocational pharmacy students.
