Abstract

This research explores the use of verbal irony in the film Death on the Nile and its influence on the psychological and narrative dimensions of the real perpetrator. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the study focuses on how the characters in the film employ verbal irony not only to conceal motives but also to manipulate perceptions and heighten suspense. The object of study is the 2022 adaptation of Agatha Christie's detective story, in which verbal irony plays a critical role in shaping character interactions and revealing hidden truths. The research addresses three core problems: identifying the types of verbal irony used in the film, examining the context of their usage, and analyzing their impact on character and plot development. The verbal irony divided into sarcasm, understatement, and overstatement serves as a linguistic strategy for misdirection, layered meaning, and narrative complexity. These ironies, especially in the dialogue of key suspects, become subtle clues that inform Hercule Poirot’s deductive process and engage the audience’s critical perception. The study is grounded in the theories of figurative language by Perrine, irony functions in narrative by Booth and Muecke, and psychological dimensions of irony drawn from Freud and Festinger. The analysis incorporates a detailed review of how verbal irony reflects internal character conflict, supports the genre’s narrative misdirection, and ultimately leads to the exposure of the real murderer. The data were collected through documentation of selected ironic dialogues from the film and analyzed based on their context, type, and effect. The findings reveal that the verbal irony significantly contributes to both character development and the unveiling of the perpetrator. The characters such as Simon Doyle and Jacqueline de Bellefort employ irony not merely to disguise intentions but as a psychological coping mechanism and rhetorical defense. In this research, it is concluded that the verbal irony functions not just as a stylistic device but as a pivotal narrative and psychological tool, making it integral to the mystery's resolution and the audience’s interpretative experience.
