Speaking skill is an important aspect of English language learning. Many students experience difficulties in speaking due to low confidence and anxiety. These problems often occur at the beginning of the lesson when students are not yet ready to participate actively. Therefore, preliminary activities are needed to create a positive learning atmosphere. One strategy that can be used is educational games. The research focuses on how educational games are applied at the beginning of English lessons and how they contribute to students’ engagement in gaining confidence on speaking performance. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, involving classroom observations, interviews with the English teacher, and analysis of students’ responses during the learning process. The participants of this study were students at the junior secondary school level. The findings indicate that the use of educational games in preliminary activities effectively creates a positive engagement such as learning atmosphere, activates students’ prior knowledge, and encourages active participation in speaking. Students became more confident, willing to speak spontaneously, and less anxious about making mistakes. Moreover, the games helped the teacher bridge students’ background knowledge with the lesson objectives and prepared them for the main speaking activities. In conclusion, educational games implemented in preliminary activities play a significant role in enhancing students’ speaking engagement and can be considered an effective strategy in English language teaching.
