Abstract

Mastering speaking skills was not only about fluency in a second language but also about gaining confidence and practical communication skills. Several factors influenced EFL students' speaking difficulties in oral presentation sessions. This study aimed to identify the factors that influenced EFL students' speaking difficulties during oral presentation sessions and the strategies used to address these challenges. The main theory used in this research by Heriansyah (2012), students' speaking challenges are categorized into linguistic and non-linguistic. The study was conducted at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, focusing on fifth-semester students from the English Education Department. Using a qualitative case study method, data were collected through questionnaire with in-depth interviews the participants. The results of the study showed that there were several factors that influenced students' speaking difficulties, 1) linguistic, and 2) non-linguistic aspects. Linguistic factors include limited vocabulary, incorrect pronunciation, and grammatical errors, which hinder students from expressing ideas clearly. From a psychological perspective, fear of making mistake, lack of self-confidence, and lack of motivation are the main obstacles that cause students to feel hesitant and nervous when making presentations. Environmental factors such as the dominance of the use of the mother tongue and limited opportunities to practice English outside the classroom also exacerbate these difficulties. To overcome these influences, students use various strategies, such as preparation, relaxation techniques, vocabulary improvement, and public speaking practice to build confidence.
