Abstract

This study delves into the semantic dimensions of the Arabic song “Ehlam Ma’aya” by Hamza Namira, applying Geoffrey Leech’s Semantics Theory to explore how language constructs messages of hope, motivation, and collective awareness for modern Arab audiences. Through a qualitative descriptive approach, the research analyzes the original Arabic lyrics of the song, focusing on Leech’s classification of meaning: conceptual, connotative, social, affec-tive, reflected, collocative, and thematic. The analysis highlights the use of diction, imagery, and contextual elements to reveal how these meanings are linguistically conveyed. The findings demonstrate a strong interplay between conceptual and associative meanings that encourage listeners to dream, seek change, and foster optimism about their shared future. The lyrics also evoke significant connotative meanings, where images of dreaming, journey, and awakening create emotional and ideological associations of hope, courage, and liberation from social and psychological constraints within contemporary Arab contexts. This research contributes to the semantic analysis of Arabic song lyr-ics, offering insights into Arabic linguistics, literary studies, and contextual teaching materials. It also provides a novel framework for examining the intersection of semantics, music, and socio-cultural discourse, enhancing interdisciplinary research in contemporary Arab music.
