Abstract

Education is a part of Human Rights. Every human deserve to get education and get the benefit from their education, technology, art and culture, in order to increase their quality of life. This research focused on women education in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women and in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s Bumi Manusia. This research focused on two research problems; 1. How is the process of women education describe in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women and in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s Bumi Manusia. And 2. What are the benefits that women characters get from their education in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women and in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s Bumi Manusia. To find out the problems above, the researcher used the theory by Mary Wollstonecraft about Liberal Feminism which is talk about the equality between men and women. And women also must have the same education as men, in order that women will have the same opportunities as men. This research used literary criticism design that is mimetic. By using this criticism, the researcher is able to analyze the novel which cannot be separated from the social and cultural aspects surroundings the novel itself. This research also uses comparative method in order to find out the similarities or the differences in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women and in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s Bumi Manusia. As the result, the researcher found the similarities and the differences between Little Women and Bumi Manusia. The similarities are about how women get the proper non-formal education at their home and helped by people around them. Then the differences are about the different benefit that women get from their education. While the characters in Little Women become a governess and professional writer, then the characters in Bumi Manusia become a great manager of the company. The conclusion from this research is, the two novels shows that the injustice of education is still appearance in some social degree, especially to women. But the two novels proved if women have a big spirit to learn and study, then they can have the same opportunities as men. Pendidikan merupakan salah satu bagian dari Hak Asasi Manusia. Setiap manusia berhak mendapat pendidikan, memperoleh manfaat dari ilmu pengetahuan, teknologi, seni dan budaya, dalam rangka untuk meningkatkan kualitas hidup mereka. Penelitian ini terfokus pada pendidikan wanita dalam novel Little Women karya Louisa May Alcott dan dalam novel Bumi Manusia karya Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Penelitian ini terfokus pada dua permasalahan; 1. Bagaimana proses pendidikan wanita digambarkan dalam novel Little Women karya Louisa May Alcott dan dalam novel Bumi Manusia karya Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Dan 2. Apa keuntungan yang didapatkan oleh para wanita dari pendidikannya dalam novel Little Women karya Louisa May Alcott dan dalam novel Bumi Manusia karya Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Untuk menjawab pertanyaan di atas, peneliti menggunakan teori mengenai Liberal Feminism dari Mary Wollstonecraft yang mengatakan bahwa wanita harus mendapatkan persamaan dengan laki-laki. Dan perempuan juga harus mendapatkan pendidikan yang sama seperti laki-laki, agar wanita menpunyai kesempatan yang sama dengan laki-laki. Penelitian ini menggunakan kritik sastra dengan pendekatan mimetik. Dengan menggunakan kritik sastra, peneliti dapat menganalis kedua novel yang tidak terlepas dari social dan budaya disekitar novel tersebut. Penelitian ini juga menggunakan metode komperatif untuk menemukan persamaan atau perbedaan dalam kedua novel. Hasil dari penelitian ini, peneliti menemukan persamaan dan perbedaan antara Little Women dan Bumi Manusia. Ialah persamaan tentang bagaimana para perempuan mendapatkan pendidikan non-formal yang layak di rumah dengan dibantu oleh orang-orang disekitar mereka. Sedangkan perbedaannya ialah mengenai keuntungan yang wanita dapatkan dari pendidikannya. Karakter dalam Little Women bisa menjadi penulis professional, sedangkan karakter dalam Bumi Manusia menjadi manager handal di sebuah perusahaan. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini, kedua novel menunjukkan bahwa ketidakadilan dalam pendidikan masih terjadi dibeberapa tingkatan sosial, terutama pada wanita. Akan tetapi kedua novel tersebut membuktikan jika wanita memiliki semangat yang besar untuk belajar, maka mereka bisa memiliki kesempatan yang sama seperti laki-laki.
