Abstract

Character is the main element of human that includes beliefs, values, and individual attitudes. American people have different with other countries, they were established with an ideology that becomes their deep identity of America, it is American individualism that gives them a belief that American people must pursuit of happiness. Then Go Set a Watchman novel considered as the prototype American character of the 20th century. Therefore, this research then proposed two problems: 1) how is the American character described in the novel? 2) What are the types of American character in the novel? The theory that is used in this research is Structuralism, especially Genetic Structuralism analysis, and Character theory that discover the American people’s characters. The research method that is used in the research is literary criticism method that is useful to get the arrangement of literary theory. The result of this research shows that the novel contains individualist character of American people and the character seen from how a person thinks, acts, behaves, or someone personality. The character of American based on individualism, the individual indicates that individualism has play a role to established American character which is described as having free behavior, independent, high education, hard worker, and respect to other.
