Abstract
ENGLISH: The rapid development of digital technology has increased smartphone use among university students, potentially leading to nomophobia. One psychological factor assumed to influence nomophobia is loneliness, with Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) proposed as a mediating variable. This study aimed to examine the effect of loneliness on nomophobia, with FOMO serving as a mediator among university students in the digital era. This study employed a quantitative approach involving 100 university students aged 18–24 years. Data were collected using the Loneliness Scale, the FOMO Scale, and the Nomophobia Scale, and were analyzed using Hayes PROCESS Model 4 with a bootstrapping procedure of 5,000 samples. The results indicated that loneliness had a positive and significant effect on FOMO (B = 1.175, t = 8.791, p < .001) and on nomophobia (B = 1.177, t = 6.229, p < .001). In contrast, FOMO did not have a significant effect on nomophobia (B = 0.162, t = 1.008, p = .316). Furthermore, the indirect effect was not significant (LLCI = -0.1992; ULCI = 0.6037), indicating that FOMO did not mediate the relationship between loneliness and nomophobia.
