Abstract

ENGLISH : This study examines how plastic pollution Public Service Announcement (PSA) posters construct environmental meaning through the deliberate interaction of verbal and visual semiotic resources. Motivated by three gaps in existing literature, namely the absence of focused analysis on plastic pollution PSA posters, the limited application of the 2021 edition of Kress and van Leeuwen's Grammar of Visual Design, and the persistent tendency to prioritize visual over verbal analysis, this study applies Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) to fifteen plastic pollution PSA posters produced between 2017 and 2025 by international environmental organizations. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the study analyzes the posters through three metafunctions (representational, interactive, and compositional) and their intermodal relations between verbal and visual elements, drawing on Royce's (2007) concept of intersemiotic complementarity and O'Halloran's (2006) concept of intersemiosis as theoretical foundations. The findings demonstrate that conceptual-symbolic processes dominate representational choices across the dataset, with symbolic substitution and hybrid imagery constructing plastic pollution as a significant environmental threat. Interactive meanings are dominated by offer images, complemented by direct verbal address and imperatives, while compositionally, centre-margin and Ideal-Real structures form the primary organization. Intermodally, extension emerges as the dominant pattern, with verbal elements consistently expanding or transforming visual meaning beyond what images alone can convey. Cross-poster analysis identifies five recurring representational frames, framing plastic pollution as a pervasive, biological, ecological, socio-cultural, and political threat. These findings contribute to multimodal discourse studies by demonstrating the applicability of the updated 2021 framework to digital environmental communication and establishing a descriptive vocabulary for how plastic pollution is constructed and communicated through PSA posters.
