Abstract

Traffic accidents constitute a chronic social and humanitarian problem with wide-ranging impacts on public safety as well as socio-economic development. One incident that attracted national attention was the multi-vehicle collision at Cipularang Toll Road KM 92 in November 2024. In the context of online media, such events are not merely reported as factual occurrences but are also constructed through framing processes that can influence public understanding and opinion. This study aims to analyze how the online media outlets Kompas.com and Detik.com frame the reporting of the Cipularang toll road pile-up based on the four framing elements proposed by Robert N. Entman: problem definition, causal diagnosis, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation. This research employs a qualitative approach using framing analysis as its method. The data consist of news articles on the Cipularang toll road pile-up published by Kompas.com and Detik.com during November 2024. The theoretical framework is grounded in Berger and Luckmann’s theory of the social construction of reality, which views the media as agents that construct social reality through the selection and emphasis of facts. The findings reveal significant differences in the framing patterns of the two media outlets. Detik.com tends to frame the incident as a dramatic humanitarian tragedy by emphasizing human error and the emotional aspects of the victims. In contrast, Kompas.com frames the accident as a systemic failure related to weak infrastructure oversight, the practice of Over Dimension Over Loading (ODOL), and national transportation management. Regarding treatment recommendations, Detik.com focuses more on technical and reactive solutions, whereas Kompas.com promotes structural and regulatory measures. This study confirms that differences in media characteristics and ideology influence the construction of traffic accident realities received by the public.
