Abstract

Discourse markers play an important role in organizing discourse and managing interpersonal interaction. While previous studies have extensively examined discourse markers from structural and pragmatic perspectives, relatively few have investigated how they mediate stance-taking in naturally occurring spoken discourse. Therefore, this study aims to identify the types of discourse markers employed by Nick Viall and Robert Irwin in the podcast episode Going Deeper with Robert Irwin and Witney Carson and to examine how these markers mediate stance-taking based on Du Bois' (2007) stance triangle. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using Fraser's (1996) taxonomy of discourse markers as the primary analytical framework. The data consisted of utterances produced by Nick Viall and Robert Irwin in the podcast transcript. The findings revealed 179 discourse markers, comprising four categories: elaborative, contrastive, inferential, and topic change markers. Elaborative markers were the most frequent category, followed by contrastive markers, inferential markers, and topic change markers. The analysis further demonstrated that each category mediated stance-taking through different interactional mechanisms. Elaborative markers strengthened evaluation and positioning, thereby facilitating positive alignment. Contrastive markers negotiated competing evaluations to clarify speakers' positioning without necessarily producing disalignment. Inferential markers legitimized speakers' positioning by presenting evaluations as logically warranted conclusions, while topic change markers maintained interpersonal alignment by managing smooth transitions between topics. These findings suggest that discourse markers function not only as devices for organizing discourse but also as pragmatic resources through which speakers construct, negotiate, and align their stances during interaction.
