Abstract
This undergraduate thesis examines the narrative structure of Max Porter’s Grief Is the Thing with Feathers (2015). The verse novel presents grief through three narrative voices: Dad, Boys, and Crow, each of whom occupies a different narrative position and regulates information through distinctive forms of focalization and narrative distance. This research has two questions about the narrative structure in this verse novel. The first question is about the mood and voice of the narrators found in Max Porter’s Grief Is the Thing with Feathers. The second question is about the integration of mood and voice from the narrators in the verse novel. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data consist of selected dialogues, monologues, and sentences that indicate mood and voice. Mood is analyzed through distance and focalization, while voice is examined through narrative level and the narrator’s participation in the story. The findings show that Dad mostly acts as an extradiegetic-autodiegetic narrator and uses internal focalization. The Boys and Crow act as extradiegetic-homodiegetic narrators in the first narrative and sometimes shift into intradiegetic-heterodiegetic narrators in embedded stories. In the focalization aspect, the narrators employ internal, external, and zero focalization. In the distance aspect, the narrators employ mimetic, diegetic, narrated speech, transposed speech in indirect style, transposed speech in free indirect style, and reported speech. Moreover, mood and voice operate as an integrated narrative system that constructs grief as nonlinear, unstable, and collectively experienced.
