Abstract
Analisis data menggunakan teori Religion as a System of Symbols Clifford Geertz untuk memahami makna simbolik, sedangkan teori ritual Victor Turner digunakan untuk menjelaskan proses perjumpaan sosial. ENGLISH : The Cap Go Meh celebration in the Lawang Suryakencana area of Bogor is a religious and cultural tradition of the Chinese-Indonesian community that involves people from various ethnic and religious backgrounds. This celebration is significant because it reflects the relationship between religious symbols and cross-ethnic participation within a shared cultural setting. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the symbolic meanings of the main rituals and symbols of Cap Go Meh, identify the forms of cross-ethnic participation, and examine how social encounters are created through such participation. This study employed a qualitative method with an anthropological approach. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Informants were selected using purposive sampling and included the administrators of Vihara Dhanagun, event organizers, cultural performers, community leaders, and participants from different ethnic groups. Data were analyzed using Clifford Geertz's Religion as a System of Symbols theory and Victor Turner's concepts of liminality and communitas. Data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings show that the symbols used in the Cap Go Meh celebration, including prayer rituals, incense, deity statues, the joli ritual, the lion dance (barongsai), and the dragon dance (liong), represent respect, gratitude, safety, blessings, and harmony. Cross-ethnic participation takes place through the involvement of organizers, performers, volunteers, security officers, traders, and visitors from different ethnic and religious backgrounds. This participation encourages social interaction, cooperation, and shared experiences that strengthen social relationships. Thus, the Cap Go Meh celebration functions not only as a religious ritual but also as a cultural space that promotes social cohesion and appreciation of diversity in a multicultural society.
