Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is an important aspect of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. However, many seventh-grade students at SMPN 1 Sukawangi still have difficulties in recognizing, memorizing, and using English vocabulary due to limited instructional time and the lack of engaging learning media. Therefore, Spinner Wheel Media was implemented as an alternative instructional medium to improve students' vocabulary mastery. This study aimed to (1) measure the vocabulary mastery of students taught using Spinner Wheel Media, (2) measure the vocabulary mastery of students taught through conventional teaching methods, and (3) determine whether there was a significant difference between the two groups. This study was based on Nation's theory of vocabulary mastery and supported by Vygotsky's Social Constructivism and Mayer's Multimedia Learning Theory. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was employed involving 62 seventh-grade students at SMPN 1 Sukawangi. Data were collected through vocabulary pre-tests and post-tests and analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests, an Independent Samples t-test, and N-Gain analysis with SPSS version 27. The findings revealed that the mean score of the experimental group increased from 68.06 to 78.71, with an N-Gain of 0.33 (medium category), while the mean score of the control group increased from 66.00 to 73.23, with an N-Gain of 0.10 (low category). The results of the Independent Samples t-test showed a significance value of 0.029 (p < 0.05), indicating that Spinner Wheel Media had a significant positive effect on students' vocabulary mastery compared to conventional teaching methods. These findings are expected to provide practical benefits for English teachers by offering an alternative and engaging medium for vocabulary instruction, as well as to contribute to future research on the use of interactive learning media in EFL classrooms.
