Abstract

Implicature is the implicit meaning conveyed in some utterances in conversation, and it is used by participant to convey his or her intention by using other words which sometime the intention is not understood by the hearer. Therefore, the writer needs to conduct the research about implicature focusing on the conversational implicature on the script of The Huntsman movies namely The Huntsman: Snow White and The Huntsman: Winter’s War and the research questions are: What types of cooperative principles violated in conversational implicature and what implicit meaning uttered by the speaker. The writer uses descriptive qualitative as the research method and he uses Grice’s theory about implicature, the conversational implicature that has to be violated by the participant, which the rules are cooperative principle namely maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation and maxim of manner.. Based on the analysis of the data, the result shows that the types of cooperative principle violated in the conversational implicature in both movies are 34 data. In the first movie, there are 16 data that show types of cooperative principle violated in the conversational implicature, namely maxim of quantity (7 data), maxim of quality (2 data), maxim of relation (6 data) and maxim of manner (1 data). Meanwhile, in the second movie there are 18 data that show types of cooperative principle violated in the conversational implicature, namely maxim of quantity (7 data), maxim of quality (6 data), maxim of relation (5 data) and maxim of manner (0 data). Besides the implicit meanings of the speaker’s utterances are to defend themselves from enemy, hide something or lie and make mocking to other participant. Based on the finding of data analysis, it can be drawn on conclusion that the cooperative principle violated in the conversational implicature in both movies is dominated by maxim of quantity and maxim of relation, and the implicit meanings of the speaker’s utterances are mainly to defend themselves from bad situation or condition because this movie was about kingdom, war and assassination.
