Abstract
Politeness strategies are essential in political communication because they enable speakers to express criticism while maintaining interpersonal relationships. This research aims to identify the politeness strategies used by Pandji Pragiwaksono and The Buzzer in The Based(less) Indonesian Show podcast and to examine the factors influencing their choice. This research used a descriptive qualitative method, analyzing 166 utterances from one episode of the podcast through Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory of politeness strategies. The findings reveal that Bald on Record is the most dominant strategy with 84 utterances (50.6%), followed by Positive Politeness with 43 utterances (25.9%), Negative Politeness with 22 utterances (13.3%), and Off Record with 17 utterances (10.2%). The dominance of Bald on Record indicates that Pandji prioritizes clarity and directness when discussing political issues, while Positive Politeness maintains solidarity, Negative Politeness softens face-threatening opinions, and Off Record delivers criticism indirectly through figurative language. The choice of strategies is influenced by four factors: payoff, social distance, relative power, and ranking of imposition. This study concludes that politeness strategies in political podcast discourse function not only to protect face but also to strengthen persuasion and audience engagement.
