Abstract
ENGLISH: This research is motivated by the use of hypnotherapy as one of the approaches employed to deliver da’wah messages in Ustazah Ilmia Amalia’s religious study. This approach has attracted attention because it combines the delivery of religious messages with hypnotherapy techniques, which may result in different experiences of message reception among mad’u. These differences are influenced by the mad’u’s knowledge, experiences, circumstances, and information when attending the religious study. This research aims to examine the processes of selection, organization, and interpretation among mad’u in hypnotherapy-based da’wah in Ustazah Ilmia Amalia’s religious study. This research employs Pearson and Nelson’s Perception Theory (2000), presented in the book An Introduction to Human Communication: Understanding and Sharing, to explain the process through which mad’u perceptions are formed. The theory consists of three stages: selection, organization, and interpretation. This research uses a qualitative approach within a constructivist paradigm and applies a case study method. The data were obtained through in-depth interviews with three informants who attended Ustazah Ilmia Amalia’s religious study, supported by observation and documentation. The selection process occurs through selective exposure, selective attention, selective perception, and selective retention. Mad’u choose to attend the religious study based on their needs and interests, then focus their attention on the use of hypnotherapy, the study’s themes, and Ustazah Ilmia Amalia’s delivery style. The messages most strongly retained relate to prayer, istighfar, effort, tawakkul, and drawing closer to Allah. In the organization process, mad’u organize information through figure and ground, closure, proximity, and similarity by connecting initial information, direct experiences, and life circumstances that correspond to the study materials. Meanwhile, interpretation shows that meaning-making is influenced by internal factors, external factors, and context, including prior knowledge of hypnotherapy, information from the surrounding environment, experiences of attending the religious study, and the mad’u’s life circumstances. The findings indicate that mad’u perceptions of hypnotherapy-based da’wah are formed through processes of selecting, organizing, and assigning meaning to messages based on their knowledge, experiences, environment, and individual life circumstances. Hypnotherapy serves as one of the stimuli that attracts attention, while messages concerning prayer, effort, tawakkul, tranquility, and drawing closer to Allah become elements retained in the mad’u’s meaning-making process. These findings indicate that the reception of hypnotherapy-based da’wah is influenced not only by the method of message delivery but also by the perceptual processes that take place within the mad’u.
