Abstract

Onomatopoeia is a word refers to imitatation of a sound. It is one of the most appealing features in webtoon especially in Siren’s Lament webtoon. The aim of this study is to discuss the meaning and the function of onomatopoeic words found in Siren’s Lament webtoon (2016). In collecting the data, the researcher used a descriptive analysis in qualitative research method. The data used in this study is the conversational context in the webtoon especially in the scenes/panels that have onomatopoeic words. The researcher analyzed the data by exploring the scenes that include onomatopoeic words in this webtoon. The meanings are analyzed by referring to Devlin’s situation semantics theory (2006) to find semantic features in onomatopoeic word. The meanings are strengthened by using the function of language by Jakobson’s theory (1960). The results are; the most common data appears on the analysis of situation semantics is the resource Situation, the situation that refer to the previous situation before the situation occurs. The functions found in the onomatopoeic words in webtoon siren lament are resource, emotive, conative and poetic. The results of the analysis show that referential functions are the most common function, because onomatopoeia has a functions as an explanatory word that has the context of the situation. In conclusion, shows that; 1) the meaning of an onomatopoeic words are generated by analyzing two conversational contexts present in every data of onomatopoeia, because some onomatopoeic words could have more than one meaning depending on the situation semantics found, 2) an onomatopoeic word must have function of language, but some onomatopoeic words could occupy more than one function depending on the meaning generated in the existing situation semantics. Onomatopoeia adalah sebuah kata tiruan bunyi. Onomatopoeia adalah salah satu fitur paling menarik di webtoon terutama di webtoon Siren’s Lament. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan makna dan fungsi kata-kata onomatopoea yang ditemukan dalam webtoon Siren's Lament (2016). Dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan analisis deskriptif dalam metode penelitian kualitatif. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah konteks percakapan dalam webtoon terutama dalam adegan/panel yang memiliki kata-kata onomatopoeic. Peneliti menganalisis data dengan mengeksplorasi adegan yang termasuk kata onomatopoeia di webtoon ini. Maknanya dianalisis dengan teori situasi semantik milik Devlin (2006) untuk menemukan fitur semantik dalam kata onomatopoeia. Makna diperkuat dengan menggunakan fungsi bahasa dari teori Jakobson (1960). Hasil penelitian ini adalah ; data yang paling banyak muncul pada analisis semantik situasi adalah resource situation, yaitu situati yang dipengaruhi situasi yang sebelumnya terjadi. Fungsi yang ditemukan pada kata onomatopoeia dalam webtoon Siren’s Lament adalah referential, emotive, conative dan poetic. Fungsi referential merupakan fungsi yang paling banyak muncul karena onomatopoeia memiliki fungsi sebagai kata penjelas yang muncul karena mengandung konteks situasi yang terjadi. Kesimpulan penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa; 1) makna yang ada pada kata onomatopoeia dihasilkan dengan menganalisis dua konteks percakapan yang ada pada setiap kata onomatopoeia, karena sebuah kata onomatopoeia bisa memiliki lebih dari satu makna, tergantung dengan situasi semantik yang ada, 2) sebuah kata onomatopoeia pasti memiliki fungsi bahasa, namun kata onomatopoeia dapat menempati lebih dari satu fungsi tergantung dengan makna yang dihasilkan pada situasi yang ada.
