Abstract

ENGLISH : In the contemporary digital era, open-world video games have evolved into complex cybertexts capable of delivering profound sociological critiques. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas stands as a seminal interactive narrative that mirrors the socio-economic turmoil of 1990s Los Angeles, encompassing issues of systemic poverty, gang warfare, and institutional corruption. The core narrative is driven by the protagonist's quest to rebuild the Grove Street Families, which is ultimately shattered by the betrayal of his closest allies, Big Smoke and Ryder. Existing literature frequently reduces this treachery to generic villainy, overlooking the structural socio-economic pressures that dictate the characters' actions. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the narrative representation of this betrayal and investigate how the hyper-capitalist economic and social environment of Los Santos acts as the primary catalyst, demonstrating the role of economic determinism. This study employs a Descriptive Qualitative design utilizing Game Text Analysis through Close Playing. To dissect the interactive text, this research synthesizes the Sociological Approach to Literature, Marxist Economic Determinism, and Structuralist Narratology. Data were collected through direct gameplay, focusing on cinematic cutscenes, dialogues, and environmental storytelling during pivotal missions such as Drive-Thru and The Green Sabre. The result shows that the betrayal is not a sudden moral failure, but a deeply deterministic economic transaction. Through Marxist Economic Determinism, the extreme poverty of the Grove Street Families represents a failing economic base, while the illicit drug trade facilitated by C.R.A.S.H. represents a massive accumulation of capital. Big Smoke and Ryder abandon their communal loyalty because it collapses under the overwhelming pressure of financial survival. Furthermore, narratologically, the game employs fixed internal focalization to strategically blind the player to the underlying economic deals. Ultimately, the betrayal serves as a narrative critique of capitalist ambition eroding communal solidarity.
