Abstract

Absurdism is a literary theory adapted from philosophical thought that states that human search for the meaning of life is useless. Uniquely, literary works applying this concept usually show the same characteristics: strangely funny. Therefore the researcher is interested in discussing the mentioned topic with the objective of the research: to find out what kinds of absurdity appeared and how absurdism is described in the Club Spongebob. The method used in this research is qualitative method specifically by document analysis. The grand theory for the topic is the Theatre of the Absurd by Martin Esslin. While the object of this research is an episode in Spongebob Squarepants season 3 titled “Club Spongebob”. The results of data analysis show that absurdities appeared in Club Spongebob are in the form of purposeless, skeptic and illogical. On the other hand, absurdism in Club Spongebob is described by the intrinsic elements of the story namely setting, plot and characterization. From the findings of data analysis, it can be concluded that the result of the research is that Club Spongebob is an absurd work with suitable features that match with the theory written in Esslin‟s book. Therefore it is clear and not surprising if the work is indeed has the impression of „strangely funny‟, since most of absurdism literary work does have that kind of impression to the readers or the spectators. Teori utama yang digunakan adalah the Theatre of the Absurd karya Martin Esslin.
