Abstract
This study investigated students’ experiences in revising descriptive texts using Grammarly AI and examined the parts of descriptive texts that were revised following Grammarly-assisted feedback. This study employed a qualitative case study design involving six selected students at SMAN 3 Sukabumi. Data were collected through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis of students’ initial and revised descriptive texts. The interview data were analyzed thematically using NVivo 12 Pro, while the document analysis compared the students’ texts based on five writing aspects in Heaton’s (1988) writing rubric: content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. The findings revealed that students generally had positive experiences using Grammarly during the revision process. Grammarly helped students identify language errors, particularly grammatical and spelling errors, and made the revision process easier and more manageable. Classroom observations showed that students actively interacted with Grammarly’s feedback, reviewed suggestions, checked their revisions, and completed the revision process systematically. The interview findings further indicated that students did not accept Grammarly’s suggestions uncritically. Their trust was generally conditional, as they sometimes verified feedback through other sources when suggestions were unclear. The main challenges included insufficient explanations for some corrections and limitations of the Premium features. Students also perceived Grammarly as supporting their writing skills and confidence and expressed an intention to use it for future writing activities. The document analysis showed that revisions were concentrated primarily on grammar and mechanics, with limited changes in vocabulary, while no revisions were identified in content and organization. Overall, Grammarly functioned as a complementary writing support tool that assisted students in improving language accuracy while preserving their original ideas and text organization.
