Abstract

Meaning is word interpretations. The interpretation of even just a word will be numerous depend on which context the word is viewing, what message that is wanted to be delivered is, and/or what is the invisible characteristic that the words have. It is in line with Nida’s statement the context that is occurred of a word or more can gain the understanding of the meaning. Through meaning, the features of words that are invisible will be appeared. In this research, there are synonymous words that will show its own feature. Therefore, the researcher formulates statement problems as: 1. Based on the semantic features, how are the synonymous words in the poems in the Ajip Rosidi’s poem Anthology ‘Modern Sundanese Poetry: Voices from West Java’ translated into its English version? 2. What factors caused the different translation of synonymous words in the poems in the Ajip Rosidi’s poems Anthology ‘Modern Sundanese Poetry: Voices from West Java’? This research uses the Saeed’s theory of Semantic (2003) to analyze the semantic features. The writer tries to relate the theory with the other theories of translation and context that belongs to Fawcett (1997) and Nida (2001). Moreover, the data that is analyzed in this research is taken from Ajip Rosidi’s poems Anthology ‘Modern Sundanese Poetry: Voices from West Java’. In this research, the method that the researcher used is descriptive method. Based on the semantic features, not all of the words that are translated into synonymous words are appropriate. The features that are explained and analyzed prove it. Features as words characteristic then determine the appropriateness of synonymous words translation. Moreover, there are two factors caused the synonymous words translation; they are context and translation techniques. At most, the technique that is used by the translator is concretization. Then the other techniques that also used are logical derivation, modulation and transposition. Further, context that is showed in each word is supporting the translation into synonymous words. As result, based on the analysis that showed in this research, it is concluded that there are not all of the words that are analyzed contextually and technically are appropriate in translation into synonymous words translation
