Abstract

Reading is one of the most important skills to be mastered by students in learning a foreign language. Learning reading is one of the learning processes in classroom. There are several strategies that can be used to learn reading. One of the teaching reading strategies that can be implemented in the classroom is Self-Monitoring Approach to Reading and Thinking (SMART) strategy. This strategy can help students to find main idea more easily. The aims of this research are: (1) to find out the students’ achievement in reading comprehension before they are taught by using Self-Monitoring Approach to Reading and Thinking strategy. (2) to find out the students’ achievement in reading comprehension after they are taught by using Self-Monitoring Approach to Reading and Thinking strategy. (3) to find out whether there is a significant difference of students’ achievement in reading comprehension before and after being taught by using Self-Monitoring Approach to Reading and Thinking strategy. The method used in this research is a quantitative method in the form of pre-experimental design with one group pre-test post-test. The data obtained by conducting pre-test and post-test. The pre-test and post-test questions used multiple choice which related to getting main idea. Moreover, this research was conducted at SMP Plus Bandung Timur. The sample of this research is student from VIII-A. The result of the data analysis showed that the average score of pre-test before implementing Self-Monitoring Approach to Reading and Thinking (SMART) Strategy in Getting Main Idea Activity is 55.00 and the average score of post-test after implementing Self-Monitoring Approach to Reading and Thinking (SMART) Strategy is 83.86. The result of calculation paired T-Test is tcount>ttable = 3.213 > 2.030. Therefore, Ha accepted and it means there is a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension in getting main idea after implementing Self-Monitoring Approach to Reading and Thinking (SMART) Strategy. In conclusion, the implementation of Self-Monitoring Approach to Reading and Thinking (SMART) Strategy can improve achievement on students’ reading comprehension in getting main idea. There is significant difference of students’ reading comprehension in getting main idea activity after implementing Self-Monitoring Approach to Reading and Thinking (SMART) Strategy.
