Abstract
Figurative language which is also known as a figure of speech, rhetorical figure, or metaphorical language that is commonly used in literary works such as in prose and nonfiction writing, the figure of speech is also used in another works like poetry and lyrics. Muse’ song lyrics in “Black Holes and Revelations” album contains such figurative language, and the aim here is to ask how the respondents explain about that lyrics. Based the phenomenon above the researcher is attracted to conduct research on the kinds of figurative language of the respondents’ understanding of figurative language of lyrics of Muse’s Black Holes and Revelation albums. This research employed reader’s responses theory, which sees the meaning of those lyrics to answer a fore mentioned the research questions. The theory of Rosenblatt and Stanley Fish of reader response were applied in this research. The applied method of this research is descriptive method. The researcher uses some instruments like questionnaires and documentation analysis to answer the analysis of respondents’ interpretation of figurative language the data collection using such instruments are lyrics containing words, phrases, or sentences from the readers’ opinion. The data are then analyzed and interpreted analytically. The results also indicated that they show good responses to the questions provide in the questionnaire and the followings are the classification: ‘respondents’ understanding toward the use of personification, hyperbole, and metaphor, in Muse’ lyrics of “Black Holes and Revelations” album. The result of this point that is the respondents are categorized into three that they are 20 respondents well understood of the hyperbole, metaphor and personification, 15 respondents fairly understood of the metaphor and personification, and not understood of the figurative language of Muse Lyrics. The conclusions of this research are the readers, or in this case the students of fourth semesters, seem quite well in understanding the figurative language on Muse’ song lyrics.
