Abstract

Reading is one of the basic skills for all the students at the high school level. In fact, the students still face difficulties in comprehending inferential elements in a text. It caused by inappropriate reading process and their limited ability to know English vocabulary, as well as a less attractive strategy used by the teacher in the classroom. The present research aims: (1) to observe how sustained silent reading is implemented, (2) to know whether or not Sustained Silent Reading enhances students’ Inferential Comprehension (3) to know the students’ responses to Sustained Silent Reading. The researcher elaborated the students’ inferential comprehension skill by using a descriptive qualitative approach that conducted in July-August, the first semester of academic year 2018/2019. The participants of this research were the thirty students of ninth graders in SMP Al Amanah Cileunyi. The data were obtained from observation, test, and questionnaire. The data analysis was presented by describing the result of the observation and students’ responses towards Sustained Silent Reading. Besides, there is a little numerical data from the test result which was obtained by the classroom average score percentage. The results show that the implementation process of Sustained Silent Reading reveals unsuccessful indicator, the domination of negative response toward Sustained Silent Reading, and the average score of inferential comprehension skill which is decreased from 43,3% in the first meeting observation to 20% in the second meeting and 16,6% in the third meeting. In conclusion, it has proven that the use of Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) tends to weak in promoting inferential comprehension nor reading interest. This study is recommended for those who want to know the different result of its implementation in Indonesia.
