Abstract

Greeting is an act of communication in which human beings intentionally make their presence known to each other, to show attention to, and to suggest a type of relationship (usually cordial) or social status (formal or informal) between individuals or groups of people coming in contact with each other. The reason why the researcher chooses greetings as the topic of this discussion because greeting is the most common speech act which are always used in daily expression. The researcher concentrates to analyze the situation and function of this greeting in The Fault in Our Stars’ film. This film is chosen because there are greeting expressions which are always spoken in different situation and function. Hence, the discussion of this research took two statement of problems, those are: 1. In what situation greetings are expressed by the characters in The Fault in Our Stars’ 2014 Film?, and 2. What are the function of these greetings that expressed by the characters in The Fault in Our Stars’ 2014 Film?. The research of speech act greetings are categorized based on theories of Searle (1969) and Halliday (1979). The researcher uses qualitative descriptive method. The data are in the form of utterances spoken by the characters. As the result of this research, the researcher classifies the data of greeting by looking at the form of utterance which are expressed by the characters in The Fault in Our Stars’ film in various situation, such as greeting as opening, greeting as introduction, and greeting by using nicknames. The function of greetings are classified into four, those are greeting functions to open an activity, greeting functions to ask someone’s condition, greeting function to give an information and greeting function to show a closeness. This functions also resulted by looking at every utterance spoken by the characters in this film. Ucapan salam adalah tindakan komunikasi di mana manusia sengaja membuat kehadiran mereka diketahui satu sama lain, untuk menunjukkan perhatian, dan untuk menyarankan jenis hubungan (biasanya ramah) atau status sosial (formal atau informal) antara individu atau kelompok orang yang datang dalam kontak satu sama lain. Alasan mengapa peneliti memilih ucapan salam adalah karena ucapan salam adalah jenis tindak tutur yang paling umum yang selalu digunakan dalam ungkapan sehari-hari. Peneliti berfokus untuk menganalisis situasi dan fungsi dari ucapan salam ini di dalam film The Fault in Our Stars. Film ini dipilih karena disana terdapat banyak ucapan salam yang selalu diucapkan dalam situasi dan fungsi yang berbeda. Oleh karena itu, pembahasan dari penelitian ini mengambil dua pernyataan masalah, yaitu: 1. Di dalam situasi apa ucapan salam diungkapkan oleh para tokoh di dalam film The Fault in Our Stars 2014?, dan 2. Apa fungsi dari ucapan salam tersebut yang diungkapkan oleh para tokoh di dalam film The Fault in Our Stars 2014?. Penelitian ucapan salam ini dikategorikan berdasarkan teori Searle (1969) dan Halliday (1979). Peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data yang di analisis berupa ujaran yang diucapkan oleh para tokoh di film The Fault in Our Stars. Sebagai hasil dari penelitian ini, peneliti mengklasifikasikan data ucapan salam dengan melihat bentuk ujaran yang diungkapkan oleh para tokoh dalam film tersebut dalam berbagai situasi, seperti salam sebagai pembuka, salam sebagai perkenalan, dan salam dengan menggunakan nama panggilan. Fungsi ucapan salam dikelompokkan menjadi empat, yaitu fungsi salam untuk membuka suatu kegiatan, fungsi salam untuk menanyakan kabar seseorang, fungsi salam untuk memberikan informasi dan fungsi ucapan untuk menunjukkan kedekatan. Fungsi ini juga dihasilkan dengan melihat setiap ujaran yang diucapkan oleh para tokoh dalam film tersebut.
