Abstract
Speech act uses in our daily activities, it consists of three elements; locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act, then the illocutionary act most dominant from the other. When people say something, they usually say it with some purpose in their mind, that is illocutionary act. Not only in spoken word, speech act is also found in written language such as in the comic. Today comic is not just a book, there are a digital comic or webcomic (website comic). The researcher chooses Up and Out’s webcomic by Julia Kaye as the data because this webcomic contains implicit purpose in some episodes. There is possiblility to find a lot of illocutonary acts in this webcomic, and on it have some types and functions of illocutionary acts. By doing this research, the researcher intends to find out: 1) What types of illocutionary act are in Up and Out’s Webcomic. 2) What are the functions of illocutionary act in Up and Out’s Webcomic. The researcher uses Yule’s theory as fundamental theory for pragmatics and speech act, and Searle’s theory for explains the types of illocutionary act with Huang’s theory in addition. Meanwhile to analyze the functions of illocutionary act, the researcher uses Leech’s theory. There are five types (representatives, directives, commissives, expressives and declarations) and four functions (competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive) of illocutionary act. This research has used descriptive and qualitative method. The researcher has used descriptive study to describe the data analysis so that it can answer the question of reserarch problem. The data used in this research took from all character utterances in Up and Out’s Webcomic which contain illocutionary act. The researcher found 90 data for types of illocutionary act. There are 25 data for representatives, 25 data for directives, 14 data for commissives, 22 data for expressives, and 4 data for declarations. Then, the functions of illocutionary act find 44 data. There are 9 data for competitive, 10 data for convivial, 18 data for collaborative, and 7 data for conflictive. As the result, the researcher gets the conlusions that there are five types and four functions for illocutionary act in this webcomic. Representatives and Directives types are frequently used in Up and Out’s Webcomic by Julia Kaye. Then, the functions is collaborative that mostly used, it has 18 data. It is expected that this research is able to give contribution as a trigger for further research in all areas of text.
