Abstract

The development of technology provides education with many solutions to create a new learning environment. Wattpad as E-Portfolio platform is believed to provide the solution, particularly for teaching writing. The research was aimed to investigate how Wattpad as E-Portfolio platform was implemented in teaching writing and what writing aspects that were improved. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants involved were 10 of 2nd-semester students at the English Education Department in Bandung West Java. The purposes sampling were used to choose the participants by taking the good, average and low achievement in writing score. The data were collected through observations to find out the process of improving students’ writing ability through E-Portfolio platform and the analysis of students’ writing to see students’ improvement on writing ability. The observation in the form of teaching program was applied for two kinds of meetings. The first was the preliminary session and the second was the teaching program implementation. The preliminary session was intended to see the students’ attitude during the learning before the implementation. The teaching implementation consists of six stages such as demonstration, feedback, editing, reviewing, final drafting and posttest. The analysis of students’ writing is meant to see the improvement performed by the students during the writing activities which is reflected through their writing from the first writing to the third writing. The kind of improvement that was found were the improvement of the grammatical errors and organizing ideas. The improvement can be indicated by fewer numbers of grammatical errors and better-organized ideas in students’ writing. The result showed that the students’ writing ability during the writing process using E-Portfolio platform were gradually improved. Besides, some issues on the use of E-Portfolio platform were also identified: bandwidth, students’ confusion in using the platform, incompatibility of the hardware, and students’ lack responsibilities for their learning. Dealing with the students’ writing ability in writing, the use of E-Portfolio platform can help them to improve their writing ability. Based on those findings, the researcher has suggestions for the institutions to provide sufficient internet for students. For the teachers to organize their classroom in more interestingly and variously. Lastly, for the future researchers to conduct the same research with different setting and subject.
