Abstract
Writing is one of the standard competencies that should be mastered by students. Students are hoped to be able to express many written meanings that have purposes in communicative and text structure based one standard competence 2013. To create a good writing is quite hard for people especially for students. Most of students were also not able to construct sentences and arrange it coherently. By using guiding questions technique, it is expected to help students and give them positive influence to drill themselves in writing especially writing recount text. This research aimed to find out whether there was an improvement of the students’ skills in writing recount text after using guiding questions as a technique of writing. The method applied in this research was a quantitative method which use one group pre-test and post-test design. Random group sampling is used as the technique in taking a sample. Afterthat, the researcher took one class consist of 31 of second grade students as research participants. This research was held in 6 meetings involved pre-test, four meetings for treatment, and post-test. The instrument of data collecting was a written test. In analyzing the data, the researcher used SPSS v.16 and t-test. After analyzing the data, the statistical result showed that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted because t-count is higher than t-table 46.572 > 1.999. Then the result of Sig.(2 tailed) is 0.00 which is less than 0.05. It means that there is a significant improvement of students’ skills in writing recount text after using guiding questions technique especially in the term of content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. Furthermore, the improvement is in the medium degree, proved in the number of N-Gain score 0,34. Briefly, it is suggested that English teacher should apply this technique to improve students’ skills in writing especially writing recount text. Moreover, refering to the results it can be concluded that guiding questions technique gave positive effect to the students’ writing recount text.
