Abstract

Currently, English is needed by every people. It starts from science, technology, medical, business, and other skill need English to comprehend and improve our career or study. Therefore, it needs an interesting and appropriate method in teaching English. One of interesting and appropriate method is Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). CLT makes the students not only understand English, but it can make the students speak well and communicative well. Then, the process of teaching learning English will be more fun. Therefore, The objectives of this research are: (1) to find the students’ perception of their activities in teaching learning English by using CLT; (2) to find the students’ perception to the teacher’s roles in the process of teaching-learning English; (3) to find the students’ perception to materials of teaching-learning English by using CLT. The research was conducted in SMAN 1 Cicalengka Bandung. The respondents of the research were the third-grade students in science major. There were 12 students used as the respondents, and it consists of 4 students who have a high score of English, 4 students who have a mid-score of English, and 4 students who have a low score of English. The research was qualitative to find the real phenomenon of this research and this research was taken in natural setting. The data was taken by observation, questionnaire, and interview to the students. The finding from the research are: firstly, during the process of teaching learning the students are active and enjoy every activity that has been given, students have a good perception about their activity. Secondly, the students agree that teacher have to create some communicative activities and motivate them, but they not too agree if teacher only give them a basic material because of students’ limitedness. Thirdly, students are really fun when the teacher used authentic materials and task-based materials. They said that it makes the materials easier to understand and memorize. To sum up, students’ perception toward implementation of CLT was really good, even they support the teacher to use CLT in the process of teaching learning English. Although there are some problems in implementing CLT, like there are students who cannot speak and understand English well. Regarding to the result of the study, the writer suggests to the teacher just keep the best way to teach them, and the teacher can use bilingual in order to make the students comprehend, it causes not all of the students are able to speak and comprehend English. Then, the academician who want to study about implementing of CLT, study another aspect from Nunan’s Theory is suggested.
