Abstract
Deixis is a phenomenon of information encoding “direct appointment”. Deixis is a branch of pragmatics which is the study of meaning, so deixis can help in avoiding such misunderstanding by knowing what the speaker says. This research discusses the problems as follows: 1. Identify the use of deixis which is performed in Nasreddin, the Wise Man short stories. 2. Interpretation of the use of deixis which is performance in Nasreddin, The Wise Man short story. The theory which is used is theory from Levinson. The theory helps the researcher in analyzing the data, also in identifying the type of deixis and in interpreting it. This research uses qualitative method from Creswell with descriptive analysis technique. The data are taken from a collection of short stories entitled Nasreddin, The Wise Man which is retold by Sugeng Haryanto which consists of 16 short stories. The writer analyze every words which contain deixis or called deictic expression which is contained in every direct speech. The researcher gets the results that there are 4 types of deixis which are found, those are person deixis (He, Me, I, Him, His, You, We, Your, Mine, My, Her, She, Yours, It, Them, They, Myself, Yourself), place deixis (That, There, This, Here, Sea, World), time deixis (Now, Later, Then, Night, Yesterday, Months ago), and social deixis (Sir, My master, Your honour, Your majesty). Then in Nasreddin, The wise man short stories, it can be concluded that the first person deixis is always interpreted to the speaker, the second person deixis is interpreted to the addressee, third person deixis is interpreted to the person whom is talked about. Place deixis is related to the place where the speech event occurs. Time deixis is related with when the speech event occurs. The last, social deixis is about the differences in social characteristic between the speaker and the addressee.
