Abstract

The students of SMAN 11 Garut academic year 2010, or class 2 were surveyed by questionnaire to investigate their mastering English, especially their mastery vocabulary and their ability in translating the English text. Further, their mastery of vocabulary was measured by three indicators (synonyms, gap filling, and definition clues), which were developed into forty question with using multiple choices. Their ability in translating the English text were measured by five indicators (words, terms, idioms, phrases, and proverb) which were developed into forty questions with using multiple choices. The aims of this research is intended to know the correlation and the influences of student’s mastery of vocabulary on the student’s ability in translating the English text at the second grade of SMAN 11 Garut. In doing this research, the writer uses statistical analysis by correlating two variables. Variable X is the student’s mastery of vocabulary, and the variable Y is the student’s ability in translating the English text. The data is gathered by flooring a test to 50 students of SMAN 11 Garut. The average score of student’s mastery of vocabulary is 61,9 and the average score of their ability in translating the English text is 59,54. The relationship between those two variables is low correlation that belongs to the coefficient correlation score 0,33. Furthermore, the percentage of influence of variable X to variable Y was 6%, with “k� result is 0,94. It means there were other factors determine their ability in translating the English text. Furthermore, hypothesis of this research that states “the higher student’s mastery of vocabulary, the higher student’s ability in translating the English text� is accepted.
