Abstract

ENGLISH This paper is talking about myth and symbol. The topic is chosen by the writer since the writer knows that myth and symbol is studied in semiotic, and semiotic is a part of linguistic subject. It means that symbol can appear in everywhere and every time, including in a movie. Some people watch a movie just for an entertainment. They don’t want to know something else like symbol or myth or ideology which is hidden in a movie. Here, the writer wants to know how important the use of a symbol in a movie is, because the use of a symbol in a movie is inevitably. Based on the background of problem above, the writer chooses a movie script by Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns to be analyzed as an object of research. There are two problems of research which is found by the writer. The first is the denotation and connotation of symbol S in Superman Returns, the second is the myth that’s found in Superman Returns. From both of statement problem above, then it will be analyzed by using signification of two phases by Roland Barthes. By using that theory, the denotation and connotation will be appeared by itself, and so the myth. Myth will be appeared when the connotation was appeared. The method that used in this research is qualitative descriptive method. This method was chosen by the writer because in this research the writer not uses quantification or numerals for getting the result. This research is having the quality descriptive and using inductive approach analysis. The result of this analysis shows that there is denotation and connotation of symbol S based on the story. The writer also finds the myth in the film like resemblance with Jesus Christ. So, the writer comes up with a conclusion that a movie is not just an entertainment, but also can be made as a media to hidden ideology message through symbols. INDONESIA Skripsi ini mengkaji tentang symbol. Tema ini dipilih penulis sejak penulis mengetahui bahwa mitos dan symbol dikaji dalam ilmu tanda yang dikenal sebagai semiotic. Semiotic merupakan bagian dari kajian linguistic, dengan begitu symbol bisa berada dimanapun dan kapanpun termasuk di dalam sebuah film. Kebanyakan orang menonton sebuah film hanya sebagai hiburan belaka, tanpa mempedulikan hal-hal lain yang hadir dari tontonan tersebut, seperti symbol, mitos atau ideology. Makadari itu, penulis bermaksud mengupas seberapa besar penggunaan symbol dalam sebuh film, sebab penggunaannya yang tak terbatas. Berdasarkan latar belakang masalah di atas, penulis memilih sebuah script film dari Bryan Singer, Superman Returns untuk dianalisis sebagai objek penelitian. Terdapat dua rumusan masalah yang penulis temukan.Pertama adalah denotasi dan konotasi symbol S dalam film Superman Returns. Yang kedua yaitu mengenai mitos yang di hadirkan dalam film Superman Returns. Dari kedua rumusan masalah tersebut nantinyaakan dianalisa menggunakan sebuah teori dari Roland Barthes tentang signifikasi dua arah. Dengan menggunakan teori signifikasi dua tahap tersebut maknadenotasi dan konotasi akan terungkap. Begitupun dengan mitos. Mitos akan terungkap ketika makna konotasi telah terungkap. Adapun metode yang digunakan dari penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Metode ini dipilih penulis karena dalam penelitian ini, penulis tidak menggunakan hitungan angka-angka untuk mendapatkan sebuah hasil.Penelitian ini juga bersifat deskriptif dan menggunakan analisis dengan pendekatan induktif. Dari hasil penelitian yang telah dilakukan, ternyata dalam film Superman Returns menunjukan bahwa terdapat denotasi dan konotasi dari symbol S. Penulis juga menemukan bahwa terdapat sebuah mitos yang dihadirkandari film Superman Returns seperti kemiripan ceritanya dengan Jesus Christ. Pada akhirnya penulis sampai pada sebuah kesimpulan bahwa film bukan hanya sekedar sebuah tontonan hiburan belaka, melainkan juga bisa dijadikan sebuah sarana untuk menyampaikan pesan tersembunyi di balik symbol-simbol yang muncul di sepanjang cerita.
