Abstract

ENGLISH The use of antonyms in a language is a natural thing for any speakers. It is often said that antonyms is a natural concept apprehended by any language speakers starting from their childhood. In every antonym, a lexeme is contrasted on its meaning level to another lexeme. English has many antonyms that could be categorized as being gradable, such as hot–cold, old–young, and big–small. This research aims at describing some characteristics and different types of English antonyms based on their meaning oppositeness as well as to the characteristics of semantic relations owned by English antonyms. The researcher has chosen the theory of lexical relation of words antonym and types of antonyms by Saeed (2003) to solve the problems. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The method contains of identification, classification and description of the data. The data used in this research are antonyms in Brian P. Cleary books “ Stop and Go, Yes and No: What Is an Antonym” and” Straight and Curvy, Meek and Nervy: More about Antonyms?”. The researcher also uses English corpus as secondary source. The results of the research show that there are 60 data in Brian P.Cleary “ Stop and Go, Yes and No: What Is an Antonym” and Straight and Curvy, Meek and Nervy: More about Antonyms?”and 45 data of the sentence in English Corpus. 30 a pair of antonyms words in Brian P. Cleary books and 45 data of sentence in English Corpus have a lexical relation words and 30 Data are a pair of them were interpret types of antonyms. That data which included of the lexical relation of words and it is antonyms in Brian P Cleary books and five types of antonyms: 12 of them are simple or complementary, 9 of them are gradable, 2 of them are reverses, 4 of them are converses and 2 of them are taxonomic antonyms. In a pairs of antonym word have lexical relation between one word. The context of the meaning is important to make a pair of antonym words and in gradable antonyms that are adjective words and another types are variation of words class. INDONESIA Penggunaan antonim dalam bahasa adalah hal bahasa alami untuk setiap penutur. seringkali dikatakan bahwa antonim adalah konsep alami dipahami oleh pembicara sejak kecil. Di setiap antonim, ada perbedaan tingkat makna pada leksem satu dengan leksem lain. Antonim pada bahasa Inggris memiliki berbagai kategori seperti antonym bertingkat, seperti panas-dingin, tua-muda, and besar-kecil. Pada penelitian ini di deskripsikan beberapa karakteristik and perbedaan tipe antonym pada bahasa Inggris berdasarkan makna kebalikan yang menjadi karakteristik sebuah relasi semantic pada antonym bahasa Inggris. Peneliti memilih teori leksikal relasi dan tipe antonym dari Saeed (2003) untuk memecahkan masalah. Peneliti mengunakan metode pada penelitian ini yaitu metode kualitatif deskripsi. Metode itu meliputi identifikasi,klasifikasi, dan deskripsi pada data. Data yang digunakan pada penilitian ini adlah antonym pada buku Brian P. Cleary books “ Stop and Go, Yes and No: What Is an Antonym” and” Straight and Curvy, Meek and Nervy: More about Antonyms?”. Peneliti juga mengunakan Inggris Corpus sebagai sumber kedua. Hasil dari penelitian menujukan bahwa dari 60 dta di buku Brian P.Cleary “ Stop and Go, Yes and No: What Is an Antonym” and” Straight and Curvy, Meek and Nervy: More about Antonyms?” dan 45 data berupa kalimat di inggris Corpus. 30 pasangan kata di buku Brian P.Cleary dan 45 Data yang berupa kalimat di inggri corpus memiliki relasi makna kata dan 30 adata yaitu pasangan kata yang memiliki tipe antonym. Data tersebut meliputi relasi leksikal kata dan itu merupakan antonym di buku Brian P.Cleary dan lima tipe antonym diantaranya 12 simple atau complementary, 9 gradable, 2 reverses, 4 converses dan 2 taxonomic sister antonym. Pada pasngan kata memiliki relasi leksikal antara kata. Conteks mkna sangat penting untuk membuat sebuah pasangan kata antonym dan kata sifat ditemukan pada tipe antonim gradable dan pada tipe lainnya kelas kata bervariasi.
