Abstract

Language is a human communication tool. That is why, human cannot be separated from language. Because it a basic necessary of socialization. Human language has language varieties. Because human uses a language naturally. Then it becomes unpredictable. Language variety has some ingredients they are slang, register, creole, diglosia, etc. Slang is as a secret language used by uneducated one and it is has been informal attitude in conversation. It is used by Jack Sheridan in his novel of Thunderclap. Then, the readers are very difficult to give means it. So the writer would like to try analyzed and find out the easiness to give means it. From the background of problems above, it can be formulated into three questions of research, what are the slangs on Thunderclap? What types of slang used in Jack Sheridan’s of Thunderclap? And what is the slang words frequently used in Thunderclap? And the writer also would analyze the percentage each type of slang with Thorsten’s formula. This research is aimed to know the type of slang used by the author in Thunderclap and to know the frequency of slang used in his novel; and also to know the percentage of each type of slang. In this research, the writer uses the descriptive method, the data were obtained from sample, literature study and documentation conducted in the research site. The data was analyzed by undertaking some steps. They are reading novel, identifying data, and classifying data. Based on the result of the research, it is found that types of slang used by Jack Sheridan’s of Thunderclap are: (1). The slang types using the shortened phrase which has been formed from verb such as lemme and lookee, interrogative such as howdy and noun such as nohow and yessir. (2). The slang type using suffix of –a which it has been formed from auxiliary such as shoulda and oughta, verb such as gonna and gotta, noun such as ya and kinda, interrogative such as whatsa, and it has means are /of/ in the words kinda and outta, /is/ in the word whatsa, /to/ in the word oughta, gonna, gotta, and /have/ in the word coulda, shoulda. (3). The slang type using the prefix apostrophe which it is formed to shortened of pronoun such as ‘em, conjunction such as ‘cause, ‘fore, preposition such as ‘round, ‘bout, adjective such as ‘way, noun such as ‘count, and exclamation words such as ‘by. (4). The slang type using suffix apostrophe which it has means to change the dental /d/ such as an’, dental /e/ such as mor’, and participle /ing/ gettin’, shootin’. (5). The slang type using infix apostrophe which it has means to change the dental /d/ such as ma’am, negative /not/ such ain’t, and others. Then, there is also the frequently of slang words used in of Thunderclap and also the percentage each type of slang. From the data analysis above, it can be concluded that in novel of Thunderclap has five types of slang based on David Burke (2001) theory. They are type of slang using the shortened phrase, suffix of –a, prefix apostrophe, suffix apostrophe, and infix apostrophe. The suggestions are given to the readers to travel about slang because it is not found in Standard English. Beside, slang words also are given contribution to enrich vocabularies for informal communication.
