Abstract
Teaching vocabulary to train students’ speaking ability is not an easy task. This is because there are so many English vocabularies and it is very difficult for students to learn all the vocabularies at one time. Teachers have to assist their students to master vocabulary. However, sometimes the method to teach to master vocabulary is not effective. Sometimes the students forget the vocabulary which was taught in the past when they got a new vocabulary. Consequently, the students do not have enough vocabulary to speak English well. To solve the problems in learning vocabulary mastery, the English teacher should have strategies or methods that can make the teaching of vocabulary enjoyable and the students can speak English well, one of them is the use of scrabble game. The research uses quantitative research. The data analysis was conducted to answer the research questions by analyzing the research data from the experimental group pretest and posttest scores and the control group pretest and posttest scores using various statistical formulas. In doing the research, the researcher chooses the second grade of MTs Al-Fatah Cikembang-Bandung which consists of three classes as the population. The sample of this research is two classes of the second grade which consist of 32 students each class. To get the better process and useful result, the techniques of collecting data are carried out by using the interview, the documentation study, and test (pre-test and post-test). To investigate the result of experiment, it uses the parametic statistics namely t-test. The result of this research shows that the data of vocabulary mastery is tcount= 9.37 and the values of t on significant level 1% ttable= 2.38. Meanwhile, the data of speaking ability is tcount= 3.88, and the values of t on significant level 1% ttable= 2.38. On the other hand, in vocabulary mastery Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. Apparently, the average score for post-test= 78.8 and 71.5. The bigger one is the average score in the experimental class, thus it proves the significance of teaching vocabulary mastery by using scrabble game. In contrast, in speaking ability, Ha is rejected and Ho is accepted. It can be seen from the average score for post-test in the control class (64.34) is bigger than the experimental class (63.53). It means, teaching speaking ability by using scrabble game is not better than lecturing method. Consequently the English teachers can apply a scrabble game in improving the students’ vocabulary mastery, because it is an effective method in teaching, and improving the students’ vocabulary mastery. Then, to teach and train the students’ speaking ability, the teacher is not recommended to use scrabble as a method in teaching. Because, this research shows that scrabble is less effective in improving the students’ speaking ability. The teachers may use lecturing method to teach and improve students’ speaking ability.
