Abstract

The aims of this research are to know students’ ability in pronouncing English word by using drilling technique, to find out students’ ability in pronouncing English word by using demonstration technique, and to reveal the significant influence of drilling and demonstration technique in improving students’ ability in pronouncing English words. This research used quasi-experimental method. The population of this research was the students at the seventh grade of SMP PGRI 9 Gede Bage Bandung which consisted of two classes, VII A and VII B. Total numbers of population were 58 students. All population was assigned as sample of this research. The population was divided into two groups, experimental group that was taught by using drilling technique and control group that was taught by using demonstration technique. In collecting the data, oral pre-test and post-test were conducted in both groups. The tests aimed to know the effectiveness of drilling technique in teaching pronunciation. The data was analyzed through statistical procedure. The research findings could be seen from mean of both experimental and control group. The mean of pre-test in experimental group before the treatments was 40,14 and after the treatments was 59,90. While in the control group, the mean of pre-test was 37,19 and mean of post-test was 40,96. The research findings showed that the result of experimental group was better than control group. The statistical result showed that tcount 8,53 > ttable 2,763, which means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. In conclusion, teaching pronunciation using drilling technique can improve students’ ability in pronouncing English words of the seventh grade students of SMP PGRI 9 Gede Bage Bandung. It means that drilling technique is an effective teaching technique in teaching pronunciation at the seventh grade of the school.
