Abstract
Everything can be a myth include English Kings’ and Queens’ sobriquets. Their sobriquets are a type of speech. There are messages in their sobriquets. Because of that, the researcher was interested in doing the research. Her aim is to find out the mythical system of their sobriquets which show the ideological fragment in the signified of mythical system. The researcher used the theory of Roland Barthes about myth and its system. Semiotic system has two systems inside. The first semiotic system is linguistic system and the second is mythical system. Mythical system is constructed by linguistic system. The method used of this research is qualitative. The researcher took the data from many documents that relate to English history especially the history of the kings and queens by using purposive sampling and analyzed the data by categorizing into semiotic system. The researcher analyzed the data based on Barthes’s theory. The data are categorized into first signifier and signified, the second signifier and signified, the first sign, and the second sign as the global sign. All English Kings’ and Queens’ sobriquets were analyzed as the first signifier. Thus, she analyzed the mythical system of English Kings and Queens’ sobriquets by using four characteristics of myth. Myth is distortive, intentional, motivational, and proved by statement of fact. From mythical system, the researcher analyzed the ideological fragment of English Kings’ and Queens’ sobriquets. From this research, the researcher found that generally, the mythical systems of English Kings’ and Queens’ sobriquets are built by their history. The ideological fragment is in the signified of the mythical system, the connotative signified.
